Maarten Nijhoff Asser
Maarten Nijhoff Asser graduated from the University of Amsterdam, the
Netherlands, Faculty of Law, with a degree in international organizations
and intellectual property (1987). Further studies include an MBA in Innovation,
Strategy, Information & Technology (1997) from THESEUS International
Management Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France, and extensive coursework
at New York University, New York, USA.
Maarten lived in New York City for almost ten years, working first as
a international legal counsel at Springer-Verlag NY, Inc, a leading scientific,
technical, and medical publisher. He gained responsibility for Publishing
Operations in 1991, and established a strategic think-tank to exploit
the company's core competencies and orchestrate a dynamic relationship
with German headquarters and world-wide affiliates. Furthermore, he assisted
in the development of new information products and distribution models.
In 1993, Maarten moved to SPC Inc., a social science publishing company,
as Senior Manager in charge of Strategy and Business Operations. He managed
35 employees, supplier and author/client relationships and developed the
company's core knowledge processes for the ensuing three years.
Maarten worked as an independent consultant for various organizations
before his term at THESEUS Institute. During his MBA, he developed Scenario
Planning workshops for the IT-function of ABN AMRO bank.
After a mere three years as senior consultant in the Amsterdam office
of Trompenaars Hampden-Turner (THT), Maarten has now relocated to the
U.S., and manages the THT office in Cambridge, MA. His international client
list includes General Motors, Rockwell Automation, Dow Corning, Telenor,
Goldman Sachs, Dow Chemical Company, Cable & Wireless, etc., with
whom he develops executive learning programs and engages in consulting
projects around THT's Culture for Business concept, which includes Integration,
Globalization, and Vision, Values and Corporate Identity projects. He
has been responsible for the continuous development of the company's interactive,
multi media, and publishing activities, such as "The Culture Compass".
He is a co-author of the book "21 Leaders for the 21st Century",
by Fons Trompenaars & Charles Hampden-Turner, published by Mc-Graw
Hill, March 2001.
Maarten has taught at various international business schools, most recently
at IPADE, Mexico, D.F., Harvard Business School, and Columbia University's
Graduate School of Business.
Maarten's areas of expertise include the facilitation of change management
processes at the senior management level, and the development of scenario
planning workshops. His special interests are strategic dilemma reconciliation,
organizational learning, information and technology transfer, and intellectual
property.
Maarten's engaging presentation style, his professional insights, and
personal anecdotes have made him a highly regarded speaker on intercultural
competence for many special occasions for professional audiences large
and small around the world.
